Brenau University honored five celebrated alumni as the institution's 2005 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees, at a ceremony, 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 14 in the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on Academy Street.

Brenau University Alumni Hall of Fame honors a number of alumni each year from the Women's College (WC) and the Evening and Weekend College (EWC) who have made an outstanding contribution to their country, state, community and Brenau University. These alumni perpetuate the excellence of Brenau through their leadership, loyal support, service and dedication.

This year's inductees include Steven D. Cronic EWC '90, '95, of Gainesville, Ga.; James B. Hammond EWC '80, of Gainesville, Ga.; long-time Atlanta resident the late Josephine Winter Rainey WC '47 (1925-1986); Suzanne Sitherwood EWC '97, of Marietta, Ga., and Presley Merritt Wagoner WC '71, of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Cronic is Sheriff of Hall County - the eighth largest sheriff's office in Georgia. Elected in 2000, he was re-elected in 2004. He is a graduate of the Georgia Police Academy and the FBI National Academy and serves on the County and Municipal Advisory Council for the State of Georgia. His citations include state-certification by the Sheriff's Department and National Accreditation in 2005. His civic organization memberships include Edmondson Telford Center for Children; The Commission for Family and Children; The Domestic Violence Task Force; Gainesville Rotary Club and Deacon Ministry at Lakewood Baptist Church. Cronic earned his Bachelor of Science, Criminal Justice, as well as his Master of Business Administration at Brenau University. He and his wife Kathy have two children, Melinda and Cody.

Hammond is professor of Theatre at Brenau and Gainesville State College. He is also the artistic and managing director of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA). His citations include being honored by the American Council on Education for Academic Excellence and Cost Management and receiving the NISOD Award for Excellence in Teaching. Under his leadership GTA has ranked as the best arts organization in the state by the Georgia Council for the Arts. He has directed more than 50 theatre productions including "A Streetcar Named Desire," "The Grapes of Wrath," "Ragtime," "Noises Off," "West Side Story" and "Look Homeward, Angel" during his 15-year career with GTA. Hammond earned his Bachelor of Science, Broadcasting from Brenau University and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Louisville. Support in life and work, as well as inspiration, Hammond said, comes from his wife Gay Hobgood Hammond WC '82, daughter Amelia, 17, and son John Connor, 16.

Rainey was an avid Brenau and community Volunteer during her lifetime. She was President of the National Brenau Alumnae Association from 1977-83; manned Brenau's Second Century Fund Campaign; was a committee member of the Brenau Centennial Celebration in 1978. Her citations include Outstanding Alumnae Award, 1981. She was an Active Zeta Tau Alpha alumna - and a scholarship, established in her memory, is awarded each year at Brenau University's Honors Convocation; there are 17 recipients to date. She was a member of the Junior League; Young Matrons Program at Tallulah Falls School and was a youth and adult Sunday School teacher at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. Rainey earned her Bachelor of Arts, Chemistry from Brenau University. Her daughters are Patricia Rainey Price WC '78 and Laura Rainey Chambers.

Sitherwood is senior vice president of Southern Operations & President, Atlanta Gas Light, Florida City Gas and Chattanooga Gas. She has served in many capacities during her 25-year employment with AGL Resources including vice president of engineering and construction, chief engineer, director of competition planning, director of rates and regulatory affairs, and director of residential markets. Her citations include 2001 "Divas" Award - "Business to Business Magazine." She is an Emory Hospital Visiting Committee board member; a member of AID Atlanta; Georgia Chamber of Commerce; Livable Communities Coalition; Alexis de Tocqueville Society of United Way and is a Southern Polytechnic State University board member. She supports Habitat for Humanity; March of Dimes and Relay for Life. Sitherwood earned her Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering technology from the Southern College of Technology and her Master of Business Administration from Brenau University. She and her husband Guy Griswold have a son, Eric.

Wagoner is president general of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and is a former Brenau Alumnae Trustee. Her citations include Outstanding Alumnae Award 1996 and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award 1971. She is an active Delta Delta Delta honor society alumna; a member of the National Gavel Society; is active in St. Stephens' Episcopal Church, Beckley, W.Va., and is on the St. Stephen's Day School Board of Directors. She has served as a St. Stephens's Day School pre-school teacher for 19 years; on the Beckley Area Foundation - Grants Committee and Advisory Committee; Azalea Garden Club - Beckley, W. Va.; Laurel Hill Garden Club - Chapel Hill, N.C.; as a scout leader; a dental auxiliary - local, state and national; Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia - Board of Directors and Advisory Committee; Co-President Parents' Association - Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va.; and the Parents' Council - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wagoner earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Brenau University. She and her husband, Dr. Joel M. Wagoner, have three children, Merritt, Andrew and Mary Elizabeth.
